Headed Far Off Our Beaten Path: Alaska

Today marks 3 months until we leave for our summer move to Alaska…and we have yet to share with you about this venture!

Most of our “crazy” ideas start with us saying, “Wouldn’t it be cool if…”.  It is how we became food truck owners, and now it is how we are leaving the hot summers of Florida behind in exchange for the cooler summer in Alaska!  In May 2015, we visited Alaska on a cruise…and we fell in love with the beauty of the state.  On a quest to experience more, our thought was “Wouldn’t it be cool if we could get jobs in Alaska for the summer season?”  After all, this would give us some more time to explore.

Not much was pursued after that initial thought.  It was not until we were on a cruise April 2016 where we started to consider it a real possibility!  We met a young couple who worked for the cruise lines in Alaska.  The young man was a tour bus driver.  It was like a sign that we should really look into it.  For those that don’t know, George has been a bus driver for the past 13 years.  It seemed like an easy and obvious transition!

Upon our return from our cruise, we really started to research the possibilities.  We knew that we had to work through the following items in order to make it a reality!  This is what our initial list looked like:

  • Find jobs – pick location in Alaska
  • Determine budget for travel costs
  • Find a place to live
  • Buy and RV or travel trailer
  • Fix our pick up truck
  • Determine the course we want to take to get there
  • Pick the date for leaving
  • Obtain health insurance
  • Rent out our house
  • Purge house of stuff we do not need anymore
  • Store items not being taken
  • Get shots and clearance for dogs

At this point a lot of the above items have been worked through.  Over the next few weeks, we will start to explain how we have been able to turn this crazy thought into reality!  We hope you will enjoy the adventure along with us!20150511_150109
